Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury is a 2022 Japanese sci-fi anime series that follows the story of Suletta Mercury, a spacian transfer student, and her massive mobile suit, Aerial. This anime series contains twelve 30-minute episodes and a prologue, which is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Crunchyroll.

Plot summary

Suletta Mercury leaves her planet and enters the Asticassia School of Technology at the behest of her mother. There, right and wrong are determined through duels between students, and the top-ranking duelist will receive Miorine Rembran as their fiancée—this prize being decided by Miorine’s father.

When Guel Jeturk, the best pilot in school and Miorine’s current fiancé, demands that his betrothed move in with him, Suletta disapproves, so Guel challenges her. Although she emerges as champion, Suletta is subsequently detained on suspicion of piloting a forbidden type of mobile suit—a GUND-ARM, or “Gundam”—which results in her victory being voided.

Miorine refuses to accept any more injustices and proposes another duel with even higher stakes. Now, Suletta must triumph a second time otherwise, she will be expelled and the Gundam Aerial that means so much to her will be destroyed.

Complex characters and unusual friendships

The protagonist, Suletta Mercury is a naive, silly girl who comes to the Asticassia School of Technology. Unlike other students in the academy, she is not acquainted with the endless battle for power and political dominance. However, she is a powerful combatant who crushes her opponents with the help of her Gundam suit, Aerial.

Suletta is quick to make friends at school, despite being socially awkward. She befriends Miorine Rembran, the daughter of rich and influential Delling Rembran, and unexpectedly becomes her fiance.

Miorine is a robust character who defies her father and his autocratic authority over her. She, unlike Suletta, is not scared of others and faces them fiercely. Even though the audience is not offered to know her combating ability, she is a brilliant business leader like her father.

Suletta’s other friends are members of Earth House, and the young girl Nika is all smiles and sunshine but has some underground transactions with some shady terrorist gangs. Chuatury (Chuchu) is amusing in her straightforward, aggressive character and hides her disturbed life behind her personality.

The children dealing with emotionally distant parents or parents meddling in their children’s lives in ways that affect their social and mental order is one of the central themes of the anime.

At the same time, Suletta is unaware of her own mother’s worst parenting. Prospera’s blatant and increasingly awful manipulations are all concealed by her appearance, as real motherly concerns are all faux-friendliness laced with menace. This awful but compellingly double-faced effect of Prospera is shockingly visible in the last scenes of the season.

Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury is a Gundam series that gives a rare Japanese straight outlook on a same-sex relationship. Rather than giving a romantic touch, audiences are showcased with a story about beautiful friendship and the horrible class struggle. The rather impressive plot, coupled with bewitching and less-explored themes, makes the anime fascinating.

There is a sharp contrast in the character of Suletta due to the incidents and influences exerted by other characters. This character development is rather intriguing and makes the audience stare in shock.

Powerful mech wars and memorable mobile suits

The duels in Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury show off some entertaining, traditionally designed mech wars and bear passionate, impactful gore in the depth of its theatrical and often powerfully personal attacks.

Some of these fights dashingly link into the students’ lives as well as those of corporate sponsors as they battle for enterprise authority through the academy.

The storytelling extends into the structure of the mobile suits as well. Each of these distinctive looks is symbolic of its owner as well as the narrative surrounding it. The pride-filled plume of Guel’s Dilanza stands out as much as the elegant, softer lines of Suletta’s Aerial are fascinating.

Each signature suit is built with its own character and is indeed majestic. It’s all associated with killer sound design and music, powerful metallics, and the profound bass of Ray Weapons, as well as a lofty score highlighting the wonder of every fight.

Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury is gory and jaw-dropping at the same time. It offers an ominous past in the prologue, flaring both mechs, bodies, and carefully established character relationships.

Each of these awe-inspiring 20 minutes reminds us how easy it is for technology to take a life. Even Suletta’s naive charm ends up weaponized and traumatizing.

Verdict

Overall, Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury dashingly creates the most heart-wrenching moments through a beautifully scripted school drama and vivid characterization. The anime presents both gore and glorified sequences alike. If you are an avid fan of science fiction, then yes, this series is a must-watch.
